Castle Forest Lodge at the foot of Mt. Kenya

The view from the deck. Castle Forest Lodge was opened by a Dutch woman. It's a great place to find serenity, chilly moutain air, elephants roaming through the forest, good food.

This lodge is off the grid. No electricity, except at night and that is the 12 V they get from their solar panels. There are hot showers in the am and pm, heated by these boilers.

The road to the lodge which turns a bit mucky when it rains.

Tree damage from the elephants, they knocked this healthy 30 foot tree down to get off the bark on the trunk. You can imagine how people coexisting with elephants in their backyard can complain about.

Our fearless leader for a morning hike through the forest. He taught us everything from the medicinal and traditional uses of all the plants to bird calls and elephant biology. Here he is showing us the spiky tree of death.

The living room inside the lodge's main house. We played 4 hours worth of Mafia with a group of Canadian professors and students!

Hiking to the waterfall

Elephant tracks (never saw any of them though)

Gemma on the path to the waterfall

The ficus starting it's long journey to surround and kill the water berry tree

Job done, the parasite wins!

The cottages

All cottages are decorated with themes and have a fireplace that they light for you every night

The grounds and the elephant pool
